DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class works as a sign language interpreter in a school district. The incumbent serves as a liaison between teacher and student to interpret or clarify subject matter. Supervision is provided by the building principal. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Provides
communications link between student's family and school;
Translates oral
subject matter for students;
Provides pertinent
information to teachers, guidance counselors and administrators regarding
assigned students;
Accompanies student throughout
schedule to insure appropriate supervision, safety and well-being of student.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of sign language interpreting; good knowledge of the
care of children; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships
with students, their parents and school personnel; ability to understand and
follow oral and written instructions; ability to express oneself clearly in
sign language both orally and in writing; tact; courtesy; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
There are no minimum education or experience requirements for this
position.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Ability to communicate in American Sign Language or other variety of
sign language.
