DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class supervises the coordination of substitute coverage for absent Teachers, Teaching Assistants and School Teacher Aides in large school districts.  Supervision is exercised over employees engaged in the coordination of school substitutes.  The incumbent is responsible interviewing candidates, verifying their qualifications and determining their areas of expertise and/or preference.  Employees are held responsible for the proper performance of assigned supervisory activities and make independent work decisions based on experience and knowledge of departmental operations.  Performance is reviewed by an administrator through conferences. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Exercises supervision over employees engaged in the coordination of school substitutes;

            Monitors the automated system; authorizes and enters overrides;

            Reviews and approves background check reports;

            Maintains substitute records and prepares payroll;

            Assigns staff to monitor/override automated Substitute Service system as needed;

            Creates and prepares reports on attendance as needed;

            Accepts calls from absent instructional staff, which cannot be reported through automation;

            May interview applicants for substitute positions, check references, and make recommendations on hiring;

Ability to supervise and direct staff; thorough knowledge of modern office programs, terminology and practices; thorough knowledge of modern office management, procedures and operation; thorough knowledge of effective interviewing techniques; ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of a staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to analyze facts and exercise sound judgment; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; ability to maintain effective working relationships with associates; tact; courtesy; physical condition commensurate with demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience in personnel, a substitute calling service, and/or a customer service environment which involved dealing with customer complaints and inquiries.

            PROMOTIONAL

            Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a School Substitute Coordinator. 

 

NOTE: Additional education from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university may be substituted for experience for a maximum of two (2) years.
