DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class provides substitute coverage for absent Teachers, Teaching Assistants and School Teacher Aides in a large school district. The incumbent is responsible for interviewing candidates, verifying their qualifications and determining their areas of expertise and/or preference. Considerable use of independent judgment and initiative is required. Performance is reviewed by an administrator through conferences. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Records calls from Teachers, Teaching Assistants and School Teacher Aides who are absent;

            Calls schools in the district to notify them of absentees and their replacements;

            Interviews prospective substitute employees and makes recommendations on hiring;

            Prepares substitute packets of information about the job, including benefits, if any, payroll schedules and instructions on completing time sheets;

            Answers inquiries; regarding Unemployment Insurance Claims;

            Maintains and updates lists of substitutes;

            Keeps statistics on staff absences and substitute data.

Good knowledge of modern office terminology and practices; good knowledge of department procedures and operation; good knowledge of effective interviewing techniques; ability to analyze facts and exercise sound judgment; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; ability to maintain effective working relationships with associates; tact; courtesy; physical condition commensurate with demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and two (2) years of experience in personnel, a substitute calling service, and/or a customer service environment which involved dealing with customer complaints and inquiries.

 

NOTE: Additional education from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State may be substituted for experience for a maximum of one (1) year.
