DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class maintains attendance records and assists professional attendance personnel by contacting parents by telephone, personal visit or letter to determine the reasons for student absences.  The incumbent is responsible for related record keeping.  Detailed instructions are received at the beginning of work and on difficult assignments.  Work is performed under the general supervision of an administrator who reviews the work while in progress and upon completion.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Maintains an accurate record of students' absences and latenesses; keeps log of absentees;

            Records attendance data into computerized database;

            Files absence notes and checks for discrepancies;

            Notifies parents of absences via telephone contact and letters;

            Keeps detailed report of number of telephone calls and home visits required to contact parents;

            Prepares report as to legitimacy of absences;

            Retrieves and interprets computerized student attendance information requested by guidance, attendance, administrative and teaching staffs;

            Prepares papers for Attendance Office to refer student to court; appears in court as witness;

            Establishes and maintains good working relationships with students and parents;

            Keeps mileage records of home visits.

Good knowledge of state requirements regarding legal and illegal absences; good knowledge of attendance office practices and procedures; good knowledge of interviewing techniques; good knowledge of school district roads; good knowledge of general office terminology, procedures, equipment and clerical techniques; ability to ascertain facts through interview and investigation; ability to complete and file forms; ability to maintain accurate records; ability to gather information and prepare reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, co-workers, supervisors and the general public; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; good judgment; tact; courtesy; physical condition commensurate  with the demands of the position

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment, and during employment in this title, employees will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
