FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class utilizes a computer terminal to provide career and education printouts from a central computer-based file. The information is provided for secondary school students and other school district residents who request occupational, education and financial aid information. The incumbent performs other work supportive to the professional guidance staff of a secondary school. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Operates computer terminal to obtain
general occupational information and armed forces occupational information;
Operates computer terminal to obtain
two-year college information, four- year college information, graduate school
information, scholarship and financial aid information;
Assists students by administering and
scoring vocational interest surveys;
Maintains guidance office bulletin
board, posting, testing and scholarship and career information;
Assists with school district
open-house days, career days and college days;
Maintains college catalog and career
information files and assists students in their uses.
FULL
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the functioning capabilities of the Guidance Information System;
good knowledge of the operation of the terminal utilized to obtain printouts
from the Guidance Information System files; good knowledge of the functioning
and services of the high school guidance office; ability to work effectively
with students, parents and staff members; ability to define specific
requirements of each student to obtain an accurate and comprehensive computer
response; ability to make presentations to groups and represent the Guidance
Department to outside sources; good judgment; physical condition commensurate
with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN-COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a New York State or
Regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree; or,
b) Graduation from a standard senior
high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and two (2)
years of experience working with youth in an educational facility; or,
c) An equivalent combination of the
above education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
