DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The employee in this class advises Case Workers, Social Welfare Examiners, recipients of food stamps and recipients of public assistance in regard to food, and related home management problems.  Under general supervision, the incumbent performs professional work involving responsibilities for advising caseworkers, conducting research, and compiling statistical lists of food, clothing, fuel and utility prices on home budgets for welfare recipients.  The employee works independently within the assigned professional field and the work is subject to review by administrative superiors primarily for adherence to established policies and the achievement of desired objectives.  Does related work as required. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Plans, with agency staff, revisions to home budgets in accordance with State standards for welfare clients; 

          Explains budgets to clients and advises clients on ways of spending food allowances and maintaining a general budget and assists in home management;

          Examines and interprets special diets recommended by physicians, and suggests substitutions in order that such diets may fall within the financial limitations of clients; 

          Conducts research studies of family budgetary problems; compiles food, clothing, fuel and utility price lists and determines adequacy of local allowances; 

          Prepares releases dealing with the use of coupons, as well as pertinent dietary information. 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of modern principles and practices of home economics including knowledge of family budgeting and nutrition; good knowledge of current sources of information and literature of home economics, consumer prices and family budgeting; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; welfare clients and other interested persons; ability to instruct agency staff, clients and others in the basic principles of nutrition, dietetics, and home management; good judgment; tact; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of experience as a home economist.
