DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The
work involves responsibility for directing a staff of volunteer workers who man
the Hotline phones for the Town of Islip.
Under general supervision, an employee in this class coordinates the
contributions of volunteers in providing guidance for those faced by crises or
problems. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Participates
in screening volunteers to determine suitability for Hotline assignments;
Trains volunteers and
schedules their work;
Evaluates volunteers'
performance by listening to how they handle their calls, reading their logs and
hearing their stated problems;
Counsels and provides guidance
via telephone for crises and/or problems;
Keeps referral file
current and accurate by frequent checks with referral agencies to ascertain how
they have helped those referred to them by Hotline Volunteers;
Maintains statistical
records classifying calls and callers to meet requirements of funding agencies
for the information of the staff;
Arranges programs for
monthly staff meetings to provide information to enable volunteers to better
handle the calls they receive;
Publicizes Hotline
availability by providing information on it to local publications and writing
copy for posters;
Recruits volunteers in
the community via outreach programs with various civic groups and
organizations.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the techniques of crisis intervention; good knowledge of the
behavior of addicts, the mentally disturbed and those faced by critical situations;
some knowledge of statistical methods; ability to supervise volunteers in such
a way as to elicit their best efforts to make a meaningful contribution to the
team effort; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
(a) Graduation from a New
York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
Degree which includes at least sixteen (16) credits in behavioral sciences and
sociology and two (2) years of experience in dealing with social problems in a
counseling
situation; or,
(b) A Master's Degree in
Social Work or Counseling; or,
(c) Graduation from high
school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six (6) years of
experience in dealing with social problems in a counseling situation, two (2)
of which must have been in an administrative capacity; or,
(d) An equivalent
combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a), (b) and
(c).
