FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in
this class assists in the implementation of programs designed to enhance the
social skills of the frail elderly population.
Duties include assisting in the developing and monitoring of therapeutic
recreational activities and counseling programs for frail senior citizens. Work is performed under the direction of the
Adult Day Care Program Supervisor or other administrative supervisor and is reviewed
through observations, conferences and reports.
Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Assists with the implementation of a
program capable of increasing the social skills of physically handicapped,
Alzheimer and infirm clients;
Assists senior citizens by advising
them or referring them to sources of assistance with problems they encounter in
housing, health care, nutrition or legal matters;
Supervises Adult Day Care staff and
volunteers;
Assures that activities and services
are provided in accordance with participants' needs;
Prepares activity plans and
supervises the implementation;
May maintain statistics of program
activities and client participation;
May prepare reports on program
activities and recommend changes;
May train personnel in the handling
of physically handicapped clients.

PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge
of senior citizens' activities, programs and interests; some knowledge of
geriatric psychology and the physical capacities of senior citizens; knowledge
of applicable state and local laws related to senior citizen programs; ability
to assist in planning and supervising programs which are effective and helpful
to senior citizens; ability to establish and maintain good working
relationships with the state, clients and staff members; ability to keep
accurate records and write periodic reports; ability to express oneself clearly
and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with
the demands of this position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
EITHER
(a)
Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university
with an Associate's Degree in a social, nursing or health related field, or;
(b)
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school
equivalency diploma, and two (2) years of experience in the delivery of health,
social, educational or community services, at least one (1) year of which must
have involved working directly with a frail elderly population, or;
(c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
