DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in
this class supports Suffolk County’s Division of Human Services’ Multicultural
Affairs and Community Engagement Unit in the planning and implementation of
community engagement activities and initiatives throughout the County. The work includes engaging with residents of
underrepresented and underserved communities to assess their needs, developing
engagement strategies, organizing community meetings and forums, and managing
communication channels to ensure effective outreach. Duties include collecting
and analyzing community feedback, maintaining databases of community contacts and
resources, and assisting in the evaluation of community engagement efforts. The
incumbent confers with higher-level administrators concerning program policies
and objectives, but is expected to use considerable judgment and initiative in
the performance of assigned duties. Work is reviewed through periodic meetings
and reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Assists in coordinating and executing community
engagement programs and initiatives;
Establishes community contacts and
resources, and maintains related databases;
Develops engagement strategies,
organizes community meetings and forums, and manages communication channels;
Collaborates with community partners
to foster positive relations;
Develops and distributes promotional
materials to inform residents of County initiatives;
Conducts surveys on community
feedback and analyzes collected data to assess efficacy of programs and
initiatives;
Makes recommendations for policy and
initiative developments;
May supervise a group of
professional, para-professional and clerical staff in achieving goals.
FULL PERFORMANCE

Thorough knowledge
of the principles, practices and techniques used in developing effective
community engagement programs and events; thorough knowledge of effective
programs used for the improvement of community relations and involvement;
thorough knowledge of the needs and problems encountered in community
organization work; good knowledge of principles and procedures used in
coordinating outreach activities and programs for the agency; ability to plan
innovative and effective community engagement programs; ability to assist in data
collection, analyze data to assess effectiveness of programs, and prepare
related reports; ability to work collaboratively with a diverse set of
stakeholders and colleagues and develop common goals; ability to communicate
with, and explain agency policies and initiatives to people of varied ages,
educational and socio-economic levels; ability to guide and support staff
members working on initiatives in a manner conducive to efficiency and high
morale; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with
officials and the general public; ability to express oneself clearly and
concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a college with
federally authorized accreditation or registration by New York State with a
Bachelor's Degree, and three (3) years of experience in planning or programming
in community organization, social welfare, or public administration
NOTE: Additional education may be substituted for
experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.
