FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class supports Suffolk County’s Division of Human Services’ Multicultural Affairs and Community Engagement Unit in the planning and implementation of diversity and inclusion initiatives within Suffolk County to promote cultural understanding and respect. The work includes engaging and collaborating with multicultural communities and community leaders to assist in the development and implementation of cultural awareness programs and multicultural events. Duties include assisting in data collection and analysis to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of multicultural programs and initiatives. The incumbent confers with higher-level administrators concerning program policies and objectives, but is expected to use considerable judgment and initiative in the performance of assigned duties. Work is reviewed through periodic meetings and reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Assists in planning and developing multicultural programs
and events to encourage community engagement and advance cultural understanding;
Consults with multicultural
communities and groups to identify opportunities for partnership and
collaboration;
Collaborates with community
organizations, religious institutions, and ethnic associations to foster
positive community relations;
Provides guidance, support and direction
to staff members working on multicultural initiatives;
Creates and disseminates educational
materials and content to publicize activities and events, and inform residents
of County initiatives;
Assists in research, data collection
and analysis to assess the efficacy of multicultural programs and initiatives;
Makes recommendations for policy and
initiative developments;
Provides consultation to County
departments and offices on the establishment and maintenance of positive
relationships with multicultural communities and leaders throughout Suffolk
County;
Serves as a liaison between County
departments, external agencies, public officials, and community groups to
facilitate communication and coordinate programs, trainings and events;
May supervise a group of
professional, para-professional and clerical staff in achieving goals.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of planning
and developing diversity and inclusion programs and events; thorough knowledge of the principles
and procedures in coordinating multicultural activities and programs for the
agency; ability to assist in conducting data collection and analysis to assess
effectiveness of programs; ability to work collaboratively with a diverse set
of stakeholders and colleagues and develop common goals; ability to communicate
with, and explain agency policies and initiatives to, people of varied ages,
educational and socio-economic levels; ability to guide and support staff
members working on initiatives in a manner conducive to efficiency and high
morale; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with
officials at all levels; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both
orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by New York State with a Bachelor’s
Degree, and three (3) years of experience coordinating with government and
community leaders to implement community specific initiatives.
NOTE: Additional education may be
substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of
two (2) years.
