DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for assisting in the supervising of varied activities and advisory services at a town or village-owned recreation center.  Duties include responsibility for assisting in the conduct of recreational activities for senior citizens and for advising them by referring them to an appropriate source of assistance.  Responsibilities may also include assisting in a program as set forth by a Federal Nutrition Program for the elderly.  The work is supervised through conferences and study of reports submitted on center programs.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists Senior Citizens by advising them or by referring them to sources of assistance with problems they might be encountering in housing, health care, nutrition or legal matters;

          Assists in the supervision of a variety or recreation activities suited to a group of Senior Citizens at a recreational center;

          May assist in ordering food and food service supplies, assisting in packing and serving food for homebound Senior Citizens and for those who are luncheon guests;

          Maintains contact with community residents to develop good relations with those served and with the entire community;

          Assists in the supervision of the offering of nutritional classes covering both general and therapeutic nutrition;

          Meets with clerical and professional personnel to discuss the progress of the program;

          May prepare statements of budget requirement for the Senior Citizen's center; may assist in record keeping and the preparation of statistical and financial reports.

         

FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES,SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of recreational and hobby activities suited to the interests and capacities of Senior Citizens; some knowledge of services offered to senior citizens by municipal or private agencies; some knowledge of geriatric psychology and geriatric health programs; ability to manage the assignment and performance of personnel to achieve the goal of providing an inviting and worthwhile social and nutritional center for Senior Citizens; ability to establish and maintain good relations with the local community; ability to plan and supervise center activity programs and to coordinate center pro­grams with town-owned programs; ability to keep accurate records, prepare statistical and financial reports and write periodic reports on center activities and requirements; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and three (3) years of experience working with   programs for the aged; or in the delivery of health, social, educational or community services; or in the field of counseling.

 

            NOTE:  College education in Gerontology or a related field may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two (2) years.
