DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class supervises a program which combines nutrition, recreation and counseling for senior citizens at a town facility.  The work includes responsibility for meeting varied needs of senior citizens in a home-like atmosphere.  Work is supervised through conferences at which center work is reported, and also through reports outlining the work being done.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Orders food and food service supplies; supervises packing and serving of food for homebound senior citizens and for those who are luncheon guests at a Hospitality House;

         Assists senior citizens by advising them or by referring them to sources of assistance with problems they might be encountering in housing, health, care, nutrition or legal matters;

         Arranges for the transportation of senior citizens to a Hospitality House and to their homes;

         Arranges for the delivery of lunches to homebound senior citizens;

         Supervises the offering of recreational pastimes, such as film showings, arts and crafts, hobby hours and pool;

         Supervises the offering of nutritional classes, covering both general and therapeutic nutrition;

         Prepares estimate of budget requirements according to capital and general operating requirements.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of nutrition for senior citizens; good knowledge of recreation programs suitable for senior citizens; ability to establish and maintain good relationships with groups and individuals in the community; ability to gather and assess data and to prepare comprehensive reports; ability to supervise the activities of volunteers and others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         OPEN COMPETITIVE

         Either:

         a) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with an Associate’s Degree and two (2) years of experience in the administration or supervision of a program which combines nutrition, recreation and counseling for senior citizens; or,

        

         b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of experience in the administration or supervision of programs for the aged, two (2) years of which must have been in a program which combines nutrition, recreation and counseling for senior citizens; or,

        

         c) Eight (8) years of experience as described above, at least two (2) years of which must have been in a program which combines nutrition, recreation and counseling for senior citizens; or,

        

         d) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a), b) and c).

        

         PROMOTIONAL

         Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as an Assistant Senior Citizens Nutrition Center Manager.
