DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class directs a number of programs and services for a town senior citizens division.  The work differs from that of Senior Citizens Program Director in that it requires a higher level of related experience and education to administer the varied programs which comprise the Senior Citizens Services.  Duties include administrative responsi­bilities, budget planning and preparation, personnel work and interagency relations.  Supervision is exercised over the professional staff through confer­ences and review of reports.  Work is reviewed by the Town Commissioner of Human Resources.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Plans and establishes town programs designed to meet the particular needs of senior citizens;

          Directs publication of a newsletter for senior citizens;

          Directs public information programs on problems of senior citizens;

          Co-sponsors a senior citizen discount card program;

          Directs varied programs of senior citizens activities conducted at senior citizens centers and programs involving day trips or longer excursions;

          Directs programs of special services such as information and referral, phone calls, home visits, nutrition, day care, home chores, and home aid.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the social, economic, physical and psychological problems concerning senior citizens; thorough knowledge of modern developments in geriatrics and gerontology; thorough knowledge of sources of funds, public and private agencies and other resources which are available to senior citizens; good knowledge of senior citizens activities, programs and interests; good knowledge of federal, state and local laws which affect the aged; ability to plan and establish an overall program to meet the varied needs of senior citizens; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with state and local officials, public and private agencies, subordinate personnel and senior citizens groups; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          a) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Master's Degree, and four (4) years of administrative experience in the direct delivery of health, social or related services to the aged; or,

          b) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and five (5) years of administrative experience in the direct delivery of health, social or related services to the aged; or,

          c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
