DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class acts as the representative of a town by attending Senior Citizen Club meetings. The incumbent assists the officers of the clubs in establishing plans and rules for the conduct of meetings, arranging for speakers on subjects of interest to the club and coordinating the arrangements for trips. The incumbent prepares and presents various educational and social programs for the senior citizens’ clubs. The incumbent is responsible for introducing and teaching various types of craft projects to the club members as part of the regularly scheduled meetings; and directs the efforts of volunteer senior citizens in programs that attempt to contact and involve citizens who are homebound, such as a daily telephone contact service. Duties include the referral of senior citizens to various agencies when they need help with economic, emotional or social problems. Work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through conferences and written reports concerning the progress of the various club activities. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Plans
projects and teaches the techniques of various types of crafts;
Arranges
for speakers on subjects of interest to the members of the clubs;
Coordinates
trips for club members; secures tickets and makes arrangements for
transportation;
Refers
the senior citizen members to agencies that can help them with various problems
and needs;
Assists
the club officers in planning and conducting meetings and special events;
May
conduct programs in arts, music, dance or other social activities, depending
upon the interests of the various clubs;
Arranges
for educational programs to be presented in areas such as health, nutrition,
budgeting and services available to the elderly;
Establishes
and directs daily telephone contact programs using volunteer senior citizens in
an effort to seek out and maintain contact with homebound elderly persons.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Knowledge of the activities, programs and interests of
senior citizens; knowledge of various craft materials, techniques and projects;
knowledge of recreational and social activities suited to the interests and
needs of senior citizens; ability to establish and maintain good relations with
the members of senior citizen clubs; ability to plan and organize programs, activities
and trips for the club members; ability to speak before large groups of people
and to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma, and two (2) years of experience working with social, recreational or
community services programs for the aged.
NOTE: Additional education from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State will be
substituted for experience at the rate of thirty (30) credits = one (1) year
experience.
