DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under
general supervision, an employee in this class directs a funded project
designed to aid and redirect troubled youth between the ages of seven and
sixteen. The work includes the
supervision of direct services to youth and referral to community youth
resources. The incumbent supervises a
staff of professionals and volunteers.
Work is performed under the supervision of the administrative supervisor
of a town youth bureau, through the review of management reports, conferences
and the evaluation of project results.
Does related work as required.
Manages
a town program of direct aid and referral of troubled youth;
Supervises professional
workers and outreach workers, and recruits volunteers to assist;
Recruits, screens and
trains families offering temporary refuge for youth in critical family
situations;
Delivers addresses to
community groups to familiarize the residents with existing youth programs;
Prepares publicity
releases on the work of the youth bureau;
Participates as required
in case consultations;
Provides emergency
services to youth and their families;
Prepares periodic
progress reports for a town youth bureau and the Suffolk County Youth Bureau.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the methods required to successfully coordinate community
agencies serving youth into an effectively functioning unit; thorough knowledge
of the range of services available to youth through all community agencies;
thorough knowledge of contributive factors in juvenile delinquency; ability to
train volunteers and staff for outreach, community organization, advocacy and
case management; ability to speak effectively in seeking support for the youth
program at public gatherings; ability to supervise personnel in a manner
conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate
with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a New
York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Master's
Degree in Social Work or Counseling, and two (2) years of professional or
administrative experience in social work, counseling or probation; or,
b) Graduation from a New
York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
Degree in Social Work or Counseling, and four (4) years of professional or
administrative experience in social work, counseling or probation; or,
c) An equivalent
combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
NOTE: The above experience must
be directly related to the problems of youth.
