DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under the administrative supervision of the Executive Director of Youth Bureau, the incumbent coordinates existing youth employment services and aids in developing new youth employment programs where a need is expressed.  The work involves work closely with agencies, schools, and businesses to develop a comprehensive and coordinated system of youth employment services throughout a Town.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Collects and distributes information via newsletter and career workshops on vocational programs and opportunities for young people on a Town-wide basis;

         Lists Town-wide agencies and identifies the vocational information, resources and referrals offered by those agencies dealing with youth needs;

         Researches and disseminates information on career and job possibilities, skills development, job-related education and training, vocational inventories and testing, and follow-up support services;

         Coordinates and expedites services between youth-related agencies and the Town Youth Bureau.

         Works to develop career job opportunities related to youth in business and industry;

         Collects, organizes, and disseminates career and economic information dealing with youth needs to local agencies;

         Assists personnel staff or agency and school vocational counselors in their development of career exploration, decision-making skills development, and employability skills workshops within their business, school, or agency setting;

         Develops and fosters a Community Vocational Action Council;

         Plans and implements special youth employment projects with financial support from the Department of Labor, local businesses and/or grant seed monies which would provide work experience as well as career exploration opportunities for youth;

         Disseminates information on employment opportunities such as Department of Labor positions, summer/year round job opportunities, volunteer placements, names of youth interested in work, and senior citizens groups willing to establish co9perative programs with youth.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of coordinating a youth program; thorough knowledge of the range of services available to youth through all community agencies; good knowledge of employment research techniques; good knowledge of current literature and sources of information pertaining to the field of employment; ability to secure broad community support from private and public sectors to develop employment opportunities for youth; ability to supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to publicize and promote the employment services offered by the department; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         OPEN COMPETITIVE

         Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in Sociology, Psychology, Counseling or Social Work; or

 

         Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree and one year of professional experience in social work, counseling or probation work.  This experience must be related to the needs or problems of youth.
