REHABILITATION
COORDINATOR 3734
Under
general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for the
development of recreation and entertainment, hobby groups, religious services
and other related efforts for the rehabilitation of inmates. This position differs from Community Liaison
Officer through the supervision of internally rather than externally related
programs. The employee works with
considerable independent judgment and initiative in planning and conducting
activities within the limits of jail policies, rules and regulations. Work is reviewed by an administrative
supervisor through staff conferences and observation of the effectiveness of
the program. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Coordinates
inmate activities with the various rehabilitation services available at the
Honor Farm;
Plans and conducts
programs of recreation, entertainment, hobby groups, religious services and other
inmate service programs for the rehabilitation of inmates;
Reviews and analyzes the
adequacy of training tools and recreation materials and recommends changes and
modifications;
Establishes and conducts
training programs in basic trade areas to channel inmates into the program best
suited for them as individuals;
Makes arrangements for
and schedules lectures, shows, concerts, and other programs offered by outside
organizations;
Participates in
conferences, workshops and seminars in order to keep informed of current
requirements, trends, practices and procedures for institutional rehabilitation
and recreation;
Prepares and submits
reports to an administrative supervisor on each inmate's progress with
recommendations of suitable future activities;
Coordinates inmate
service programs with the materials at the inmate library.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good
knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of inmate rehabilitation;
good knowledge of principles and practices of sports, games, hobbies, and other
activities used in the field of recreation; some knowledge of the basic
principles of teaching methods and the learning process; ability to control and
direct inmates individually and in groups and to maintain security precautions;
ability to plan, develop, conduct and evaluate rehabilitation training
programs; ability to create interest in and organize hobby groups, training
programs and recreational activities; ability to establish and maintain
effective working relationships with inmates, supervisors, co-workers and the
general public; ability to maintain records and prepare reports; ability to
express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a
Bachelor's Degree in a social or behavioral science, and four (4) years of
responsible experience in the organization of institutional rehabilitation or
recreation programs.
NOTE:
Additional relevant education will be substituted for experience on a
year-for-year basis.
