DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class
investigates, evaluates and makes recommendations concerning complaints of discrimination,
which come under the jurisdiction of the Suffolk County Human Rights
Commission. The duties require
proficiency in both Spanish and English.
Responsibility includes interviewing complainants, witnesses and
supportive agencies, gathering data, preparing written reports and making
appropriate recommendations.
Investigative assignments are received from superiors, but the
Investigators are expected to exercise some independent judgment and initiative
in carrying them out. Work is reviewed
through periodic reports, conferences and consultations with higher-level Human
Rights Investigators. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Investigates,
evaluates and makes recommendations concerning complaints of discrimination
because of sex, marital status, color, age, race, disability or religion in
housing, employment, welfare, education and other related areas of
discrimination;
Collects
and reviews data pertinent to the investigation;
Prepares
reports of investigative activities and recommends appropriate action to be
taken;
Represents
the Human Rights Commission at meetings and makes presentations to various
civic groups;
Prepares
oral and written reports concerning various areas of discrimination as assigned
by the Executive Director.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the various types of discriminatory
practices and effective methods of resolving them; good knowledge of Federal,
State and local civil rights laws governing discrimination; ability to read, write,
and converse fluently in both Spanish and English; ability to translate written
material from English into Spanish; ability to obtain and verify information
through investigation; ability to analyze facts systematically and arrive at
equitable conclusions; ability to deal with clients, witnesses and the public
courteously and effectively; ability to prepare clear, accurate and
comprehensive reports; ability to comprehend and follow oral and written
instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a
Bachelor’s Degree.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
At the
time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees will be
required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York
State.
There will
be a qualifying Spanish language examination.
