DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under supervision, an employee in this class is
responsible for assisting in the supervision, assignment and execution of
investigations for the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission. Responsibilities
include answering telephone inquiries from the public, answering questions and
going over each individual case with the Investigators. The incumbent is
expected to exercise some independent judgment and initiative in the execution
of these duties. Work is reviewed through periodic reports, conferences and
consultations with the Principal Human Rights Investigator. Does related work
as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Investigates,
evaluates and makes recommendations concerning complaints of discrimination
because of sex, marital status, color, age, race or religion in housing,
employment, welfare, education and other related areas of discrimination;
Interviews complainants, witnesses and
supportive agencies to obtain facts and gather information pertinent to each
case;
Assists in
assigning and supervising the activities of the Investigators in resolving
complaints;
Counsels
and advises the Investigators in handling individual cases;
Collects
and reviews data pertinent to the investigation;
Prepares
reports of investigative activities, and makes recommendations as to the
appropriate action to be taken;
Represents
the Human Rights Commission at meetings; makes presentations to various civic
groups;
Prepares
oral and written reports concerning various areas of discrimination as assigned
by the Executive Director.

Good knowledge of the various types of discriminatory
practices and effective methods of handling them; good knowledge of current
trends, developments and literature in the area of discrimination; ability to
assign, direct and supervise the activities of personnel in a manner conducive
to full performance and high morale; ability to obtain and verify information
and to ascertain facts through investigation; ability to systematically analyze
facts and arrive at equitable and fair conclusions regarding investigations;
ability to prepare clear, accurate and comprehensive reports; ability to
comprehend and follow written and oral instructions; ability to deal with
clients, witnesses and the public courteously and effectively; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY
State with a Bachelor’s Degree, and one (1) year of experience in the
investigation of complaints concerning violations of human rights.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of a valid New York State driver's license at
time of appointment; appointees must maintain a valid license throughout
employment in this title.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2)
years of permanent competitive status as a Human Rights Investigator or Human
Rights Investigator (Spanish Speaking).
