DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for the overall coordination of the activities and services of the Sanctuary Program.  The work involves direct­ing a Sanctuary Program designed to meet the needs of children who are homeless or who run away from home, through both residential and non-residential programs.  The incumbent is expected to exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative in the performance of assigned duties.  The work is performed under the general supervision of assigned administrative personnel and is reviewed through conferences, consultations and the submission of required reports, for the achievement of desired results.  Supervision is exercised over professional and clerical personnel.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Coordinates and supervises the activities of the Sanctuary Program;

          Develops and implements policies and procedures for the Sanctuary Program;

          Designs and implements a staff training program and a volunteer family training program;

          Supervises all case activities including staff conferences, review of written material, long range case plans and referrals to other agencies;

          Prepares press releases and informational literature regarding agency programs and services.

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of coordinating a sanctuary program; comprehensive knowledge of the principles of social work; thorough knowledge of the causative factors which precipitate adolescents' running away or being "throwaways"; thorough knowledge of social service resources available in the community; good knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of administration; good knowledge of effective super­visory techniques; good knowledge of legislation applicable to the program operation; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, clients and the general public; ability to translate legislative guidelines and directives into operating procedures; ability to coordinate and direct the work of employees in a manner conducive to full perform­ance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; good judgment; tact; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and four (4) years of administrative experience in a youth service agency.

 

NOTE:  Additional graduate education in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience.
