DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists in the planning, program design and administration of a municipal Youth Bureau.  The incumbent is responsible for assisting in business management activities of the Youth Bureau, evaluation of projects in progress, and the effectiveness of completed projects designed to control and prevents juvenile delinquency.  In the performance of duties, the incumbent exercises a considerable amount of independent judgment and initiative.  Supervision is given to a professional and clerical staff and is received from an administrative supervisor through conferences and written reports.  Does related work as required.

           

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists in the program coordination of a municipal Youth Bureau;

            Integrates new services into regular Youth Bureau programming;

            Maintains and monitors contract agency services;

            Plans, with professional staff, an ongoing advocacy program, and the development of volunteer programs;

            Consults and motivates community groups towards participation in activities designed for the prevention of delinquency;

            Assists in proposal writing, budget writing and the preparation of reports and public relations material.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of factors underlying juvenile delinquency; good knowledge of federal and state aid programs; good knowledge of methods of planning programs and activities for youths; ability to maintain financial, statistical and bureau records; ability to gain the cooperation and establish effective working relationships with staff members, community groups and the general public; ability to supervise in a manner conducive to efficiency and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of professional experience dealing with the social and educational aspects of youth and their problems.

           

NOTE:  Additional relevant education from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
