DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is responsible for establishing and
maintaining contact with private and public organizations within the community
to educate them concerning various domestic violence programs. The employee coordinates community efforts
with the department and service providers for the benefit of the client/client
family. Considerable independent
judgement and initiative are required in planning and conducting activities
within the limits of policy rules and regulations. Work is reviewed by the supervisor through staff conferences, and
observation of the effectiveness of the program. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Coordinates domestic
violence services for the department; plans, conducts and coordinates services
and education programs with service providers for the benefit of victims of
domestic violence;
Maintains liaison with
law enforcement groups, advocacy groups, Child Protective Services and
preventive services for children and adults, shelters and community service
agencies;
Assists the department
in identifying victims/victim families;
Participates in
conferences, workshops and seminars in order to keep informed of current
requirements, trends, practices, and procedures to assist victims;
Prepares and submits
reports to an administrative superior;
Coordinates liaison
efforts with other service agencies such as shelters, vocational training
programs, legal services programs, courts, law enforcement and victim service
agencies;
Acts as a liaison to the
Long Island Food Bank and for food pantry network;
Participates in
committees to address the issues of hunger and malnutrition;
Assists the committees
to make recommendations to solve the problems of hunger and poverty;
Plans, conducts and
coordinates emergency food distribution for the department.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of available community services for victims of
domestic violence; good knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques
for working with victims of domestic violence and service providers; good
knowledge of current sources of information regarding services for victims of
domestic violence; ability to work closely with families, employers and
institutional and community based service groups; ability to communicate with
and explain agency policies and procedures to people of varied socio-economic
and educational levels; ability to provide direction to clients in both
individual and group situations; ability to maintain records and prepare
reports; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in
writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
with clients, coworkers and the general public; good judgement and emotional
maturity; physical conditions commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or
university with a Master's degree in Social work, Counseling, Psychology,
Criminal Justice or a related field and two (2) years experience in
rehabilitation counseling in an institutional or clinic setting.
NOTE:
Additional counseling experience in an institutional or clinic setting
may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis. Candidates must have graduated from high
school or possess a high school equivalency diploma.
