DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class will coordinate the voluntary efforts of both the public and private sectors to provide goods and services to needy town residents.  The incumbent is responsible for interfacing with local business and corporate leaders, service agencies, town employees and the general public to determine residents' needs and encourage volunteerism.  Work is performed with a good degree of independence and initiative and is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through conferences and observation of the program's effectiveness.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Plans, directs and monitors the assistance volunteer program to maximize community involvement and program accomplishments;

          Recruits a coalition of public and private sector volunteers;

          Screens, recommends and trains volunteers for the various assistance programs;

          Interfaces with community leaders, service agencies, government employees and town residents to design and implement new programs or revise existing ones to better meet the needs of those served;

          Works in conjunction with the Public Information Office to develop a campaign to encourage volunteerism;

          Prepares periodic reports as required.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques utilized in volunteer program development; good knowledge of recent developments, current literature and sources of information pertaining to volunteer programs; ability to maintain an effective working relationship with public and private agencies, community leaders and town employees, and to coordinate their efforts into productive results; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and two (2) years of experience in the administration , coordination, direction or supervision of a social, voluntary or community action program in a public or private agency.

 

NOTE:  Additional experience may be substituted for education on a year-for year basis, up to a limit of four years.
