DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class develops and coordinates one or more volunteer programs within the jurisdiction of an agency to insure optimum usage of the human resources available to the agency. The incumbent develops new or expanded human resource programs in conjunction with other administrative staff members to meet client or organizational needs. The incumbent is responsible for the recruitment, assignment and evaluation of the volunteers working in the volunteer programs. The incumbent develops training programs for volunteers and may be required to participate in the actual training of volunteer workers. Work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through conferences, assessment of program development and the achievement of organizational objectives. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Plans, assembles and
monitors, through established procedures, the volunteer programs of an agency;
Coordinates the
recruitment of volunteers including interviewing, screening and recommendations
for acceptance into the program;
Develops and implements
new volunteer programs, and revises and expands existing volunteer programs;
Coordinates the placement
of volunteers in the various programs administered by the jurisdiction;
Develops and coordinates
training programs for new volunteers;
Instructs agency
personnel in the use of volunteers to insure the optimum use of human
resources;
Prepares periodic reports
as required.

CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles and methods used in volunteer
program development; good knowledge of the procedures used in carrying out
effective training programs; good knowledge of recent developments, current
literature and sources of information relative to volunteer programs; ability
to instruct and supervise volunteers in such a way as to attain continued
productivity and effectiveness while maintaining high morale; ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with public and private
agencies, the general public, co-workers and the volunteer staff; ability to
express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; good
judgment; tact; courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of
the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a New
York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
Degree, and two (2) years of experience in the administration, supervision or
coordination of social or community services in a public or private agency.
