FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under direct supervision, an employee in
this class provides services to participants in the Career Couture Program for
underprivileged job-seekers in the Suffolk County Department of Labor,
Licensing and Consumer Affairs. The work involves promoting the program at public
events, soliciting donations of clothing and services, personally assisting
clients in their selection of interview-appropriate attire, and maintaining
records. The incumbent assists in establishing policies and procedures,
developing long term plans, and in evaluating program performance. Performance
is reviewed by supervisors for effectiveness and adherence to departmental
practices and policies. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Organizes clothing drives and
hosts onsite recruitment at retail stores, community events and local
businesses;
Communicates
program information at job fairs and other community outreach efforts;
Solicits
and accepts donations of clothing, shoes, jewelry, dry cleaning and grooming
services;
Sorts
and displays clothing in the Career Couture Office;
Schedules
appointments and personally assists clients in selecting appropriate attire;
Addresses
issues of personal grooming and hygiene that may be a barrier to employment;
Makes
referrals to agencies offering free products and services to enhance clients’
employability;
Maintains
an inventory of donations and keeps participant databases, including necessary
documentation under Workforce Investment Act regulations.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of acceptable grooming
and dress standards for job applicants; good knowledge of available private and
public sector sources of clothing and services that may be donated; skill in
evaluating needs and offering employability suggestions in a sensitive manner; ability
to keep basic records and produce associated reports; ability to establish
effective working relationships with representatives of the private sector and
public agencies; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
good judgment, tact, and empathy in dealing with sensitive human problems; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either:
a)
Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or
registration by New York State with a Bachelor’s Degree; or,
b)
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school
equivalency diploma and 4 years of experience in a position involving community
service, public relations, donation solicitation or retail management; or,
c)
An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits
of (a) and (b).
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Upon
appointment and during employment in this title, may be required to possess a
valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise
demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation requirements of the job.
