DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under
general direction from the Office of the County Executive, an employee in this
class directs and supervises the activities of the Office for Women, a resource
information and referral service for women seeking assistance from government
and private agencies. The incumbent
advises and assists the County Executive as well as other departments in the
development of policies to meet women's needs.
Supervision is exercised over a professional and clerical staff. Work is reviewed by an administrative
supervisor through conferences and oral and written reports. Does related work as required.
Directs a professional
and clerical staff in the establishment and operation of a Suffolk County
information and referral service for women seeking assistance from government
and private agencies;
Supervises
the conducting of a comprehensive survey to determine resources available for
women;
Develops and supervises
the development of programs designed to stimulate community awareness and
interest in women's needs and the resources available to them;
Advises and assists the
County Executive and County departments in the development of policies to meet
women's needs;
Cooperates with, and acts
as liaison for, all county agencies in order to assure the optimum degree of
authorized county services for women.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of programs offered by public and private agencies
for the assistance of women; thorough knowledge of the problems faced by women;
ability to communicate effectively with officials and others in the public and
private sectors to encourage assistance and cooperation in attaining desired
objectives; ability to supervise a professional and clerical staff in a manner
conducive to full performance and high morale; good judgment; tact; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either:
a) Graduation from a New
York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
Degree, and six (6) years of experience in community services, human services,
public service or education, two (2) years of which must have been in a
responsible position dealing with women's or minority advocacy programs; or,
b) Graduation from a
standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma,
and ten (10) years of experience in community services, human services, public
service or education, two (2) years of which must have been in a responsible
position dealing with women's or minority advocacy programs; or,
c) An equivalent
combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b),
except that no substitution is allowed for the two (2) years of specialized
experience.
