DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An individual in this class will be responsible for providing one-on-one tutoring to elementary school children who are struggling in their reading proficiency.  The incumbent will be expected to provide academic support service to children within the College's constituency service area.  Tutoring is performed at various school locations and requires the incumbent to make field visits.    

        

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Tutors small groups in a classroom setting;

         Reviews work produced by elementary school pupils;

Acts as a mentor/teacher while working one-on-one with individual students;

         Administers verbal exams for high-risk groups;

         Monitors work assignments of selected groups.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONALCHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of English, spelling or mathematics; ability to communicate effectively with elementary school children; ability to issue clear oral and/or written instructions; ability to work responsibly and independently in an educational setting;  ability to consistently meet attendance requirements of the employing school district;  ability to demonstrate proficiency in mastering subject matter;  possesses a commitment to a career in either education and/or social services; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Full-time enrollment in the Suffolk County Community College under the provisions of the Work Study Program.
