DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class provides part-time services to an off-campus community organization or group by means of a Federal Work Study Program.  The incumbent performs work of a clerical nature in school districts, County departments, community groups, libraries and hospitals.  Direct supervision is received from an immediate supervisor who shall review work in progress and upon completion.  Does related work as required.

           

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Performs a variety of clerical duties in an off-campus community organization or group such as the Economic Opportunity Council, hospitals, laboratories, school districts and County departments;

            May work in a hospital assisting in the capacity of a Nurses Aide, Receptionist, Laborer, Switchboard Operator or as an aide in the out-patient clinic;

            May assist in a community library by filing cards, in the card catalog, checking book lists, shelving books and helping at the check-out desk;

            May assist teachers in playground supervision, tutoring students, marking objective exams and setting up teaching aides;

            May assist personnel at the Brookhaven Laboratory in setting up laboratory apparatus, equipment and dismantling, cleaning and storing the same after use.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Some knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic; some knowledge of general office terminology, procedures, equipment and clerical techniques; ability to rapidly acquire a working knowledge of the methods, principles and techniques involved in the work; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to work well within the framework of a variety of assigned tasks which differ substantially with one another.

 

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

            Full time enrollment in the Suffolk County Community College under the provisions of the Work Study Program.
