DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under the supervision of a Day Care Center Manager, an employee in this class is responsible for assisting in supervising varied activities and services at a day care center.  Duties include assisting in the conduct of educational, recreational and/or social activities.  Responsibilities may also include assisting in a nutrition program.  Work is supervised by direct observation and study of reports submitted regarding center programs.  Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists in the supervision of a variety or educational, recreational and/or social activities suited to a group of children at a day care center;

          Supervises and participates in the changing of diapers for infants and pre-schoolers not toilet trained;

          Supervises Child Care Aides in carrying out recreational and group activities;

          Maintains contact with parents to develop positive relations with those served and with the entire community;

          Meets with subordinates to discuss the progress of the program;

          May assist in ordering food and food service supplies; assists in packing and serving food for children;

          May prepare statements of budget requirements for the center;

          Helps supervise the collection of day care fees.

         

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of educational, recreational, and social activities suited to the interests and capacities of children under the age of six; some knowledge of child psychology; some knowledge of suitable health programs for infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers; ability to supervise personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain positive relations with community members and organizations; ability to plan and supervise center activity programs and to coordinate center programs with town-wide programs; ability to keep accurate records and write periodic reports on center activities; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education, and two (2) years of experience in a day care, pre-school or kindergarten setting.
