DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The position involves responsibility for managing a day care program offered at a facility for children under the age of six.  The employee supervises varied activities and services at a day care center, working under the supervision of an administrator.  The employee may also oversee a nutrition program for children.  The work is not supervised directly, but through conferences and study of reports submitted on center programs.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Supervises a variety of day care activities suited to a group of children at a day care center, as specified under New York State Department of Social Services regulations (Part 418);

          Maintains contact with parents to develop positive relations with those served and with the entire community;

          Supervises and participates in group activities for preschool children;

          Supervises and participates in the changing of diapers for the infants and pre-schoolers not toilet trained;

          Supervises Child Care Aides in carrying out recreational and group activities;

          Meets with center staff members to discuss the progress of the program;

          Prepares statement of budget requirements for the day care center;

          Supervises the collection of day care fees;

          May order food and food service supplies and supervise packing and serving of food for children.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of services to promote the physical, intellectual, social and emotional well-being of children; good knowledge of services offered to children by other service providers; good knowledge of child psychology; good knowledge of health programs suitable for infants, toddlers and pre-school age children; ability to manage the assignment and performance of personnel to achieve the goal of providing worthwhile educational, social and nutritional programs for children; ability to establish and maintain positive relations with the local community; ability to coordinate center programs with town-wide programs; ability to keep accurate records and write periodic reports on center activities; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education, and two (2) years of experience in a day care, pre-school or kindergarten setting, at least one (1) year of which must have been in an administrative capacity.

 

          PROMOTIONAL

          Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as an Assistant Day Care Center Manager.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

          Candidates must possess a New York State Certificate in Early Childhood Education at the time of appointment.
