DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class monitors and directs
children in a Child Care Program, which provides care for infants, toddlers and
preschoolers all day, and/or kindergarten, elementary and middle school
children in a School-Age Child Care Program during times when school is not in
session. The incumbent works under the
supervision of a program director. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises Assistant Group Leaders
(School-Age Child Care) and Child Care Aides;
Assists children with arts and crafts
activities;
Plays games
with children individually or in groups;
Supervises physical activities
including exercise and active recreation;
Reads stories to children;
Participates in all activities,
including feeding and diaper changing;
Supervises group activities directed at
fostering social skills;
Sets up equipment such as VCRs so that
children may view tapes;
Assists in serving breakfast during the
morning session and snacks in the afternoon;
Supervises children during time set
aside for completion of homework assignments;
Reports on going problems to the
director.

Ability to establish and maintain effective
relationships with parents, children and co-workers; ability to supervise
children in varying situations and to maintain order while promoting growth of
individual academic and social skills; ability to read; ability to care for
infants and toddlers; ability to operate audio visual equipment such as VCRs;
ability to instruct students in individual and group activities including games
and physical activities; ability to understand and follow oral and written
instructions; good judgment; patience; tact; courtesy; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
SCHOOL-AGED CHILD CARE PROGRAMS
a) Graduation
from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with
an Associate's Degree in Child
Development, Recreation or a related field; or,
b) High
school diploma or its equivalent and two years experience working with children
under 13 years of age.
PRESCHOOL/INFANT-TODDLER PROGRAMS
a) Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with an associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or a child-related field;or,
b) Possession of a Child Development Associate credential and two (2) years of experience related to caring for children.
NOTE: Group Leader (Child Care) for children ages
six weeks to three years must have at least one (1) year of specific experience
or training in infant or toddler care.
Employees in this title must be at
least eighteen (18) years old at time of appointment.
