DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists in monitoring and directing students in a School-Age Child Care Program which provides care for elementary and middle school children during the hours when parents are at work and school is not in session.  The employee works under the supervision of a Group Leader (School-Age Child Care) or a Director.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists children with arts and crafts activities;

            Plays games with children individually or in groups;

            Assists in supervising physical activities including exercise and active recreation;

            Reads stories to children;

            Assists in supervising group activities directed at fostering social skills;

            Sets up equipment such as VCR's so that children may view tapes;

            Assists in serving breakfast during the morning session and snacks in the afternoon;

            Supervises children during time set aside for completion of homework assignments.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with parents, children and co-workers; ability to supervise children in varying situations and to maintain order while promoting growth of individual academic and social skills; ability to read; ability to operate audio visual equipment such as VCR's; ability to instruct students in individual and group activities including games and physical activities; ability to understand and follow oral and written instruc­tions; good judgment; patience; tact; courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            Either:

            (A) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; or

            (B) Six (6) months of experience working with children in a day care, early child­hood or related program.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

If under 18 years of age or does not possess a high school or high school equivalency diploma, must not be allowed to supervise a group independently.

 

Employees in this title must be at least sixteen (16) years old at time of appointment.
