DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS   

An employee in this class plans, develops, directs and supervises a School-Age Child Care Program which provides care for elementary and middle school children during the hours when parents are at work and school is not in session.  The Director may supervise a staff in providing educational , recrea­tional and social activities for children.  The incumbent, in addition to planning, developing and directing the program, may perform the duties of a School-Age Child Care Group Leader.  Work is performed under the general direction of the School Board or program director. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Plans daily activities for children enrolled in a School-Age Child Care program;

            May supervise and/or act as a School-Age Child Care Group Leader involved in overseeing educational, recreational and social activities of children;

            Consults with administrative staff to assure that program needs are being met;

            Develops and implements policies as set forth by the administrative supervisor;

            Recruits and supervises staff members;

            Manages the program's annual budget and authorizes purchase of required materials and supplies;

            Acts as a resource to community-based organizations for developing programs for children and/or parents;

            Coordinates parent/child education workshops, support groups and seminars;

            Serves as a member of an advisory committee.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the types of activities appropriate for a School- Age Child Care Program; thorough knowledge of relevant laws regulating School-Age Child Care Programs, good knowledge of public administration and budget prepara­tion; ability to plan and establish an overall program to meet the needs of school-age children and their parents; ability to develop good working relation­ships with parents, children, staff and school board members; ability to supervise staff members in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; good judgment; tact; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Either:

            (a) An Associate's Degree from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by New York State in child development, home economics education, home economics with a specialization in child and family development, early childhood education, elementary education, physical education, recreation or a related field, and two (2) years of direct experience working with children including at least one (1) year in a supervisory capacity in an early childhood education program or child day care program; or,

            (b)  Sixty (60) credits from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by New York State including eighteen (18) credits in the previously listed areas of concentration, and two (2) years of direct experience working with children including at least one (1) year in a supervisory capacity in an early childhood education program or child day care program.
