DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under
general direction, an employee in this class directs a child care program which
provides care for infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers as well as kindergarten,
elementary and middle-school children.
The incumbent plans and develops programs offered all day for infants,
toddlers and pre-schoolers and before and after school for school-age children. The work requires considerable use of
independent judgment and initiative.
Performance is reviewed by a school administrator through conferences
and reports. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Interviews
and hires child care staff;
Plans daily activities
for the children;
Supervises staff
participating in educational, recreational and social activities with the
children;
Develops and implements
policies set by the school board;
Manages the program's annual
budget and authorizes purchase of required materials and supplies;
Maintains contact with
parents to develop positive relationships.

CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the types of activities appropriate for a child
care program for children from infancy through middle-school age; thorough
knowledge of services available to promote the physical, intellectual, social,
and emotional well-being of children; good knowledge of public administration
and budget preparation; good knowledge of laws regulating child care programs;
ability to plan, establish and direct a program meeting the needs of children
and their parents; ability to develop good working relationships with children,
parents, staff, and school board members; ability to supervise in a manner
conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to maintain records and
prepare reports; ability to express oneself clearly both orally and in writing;
good judgment; tact; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN-COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a New
York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
Degree which includes or is supplemented by eighteen (18) credits in early
childhood education plus two (2) years of day care teaching experience one year
of which must have been in a supervising capacity.
