DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for leading an assigned group in a variety of activities within a recreational facility or program.  The incumbent is required to work with all age groups in a firm and tactful manner, and must also possess the ability to rapidly acquire a knowledge of the rules and objectives of a variety of games, hobbies and sports.  Work is performed in accordance with a predetermined program under the direct supervision of a program supervisor.  Does related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists in conducting a planned activity at a recreation facility;

            Instructs participants in sports, games, dancing, singing, handicrafts, plays and other activities;

            Enforces safety rules and regulations at the recreation facility;

            May administer first aid when necessary;

            Issues and cares for equipment, materials and supplies;

            Maintains simple records;

            Prepares reports on activities;

            Acts as a sports official.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of sports, games, hobbies and related recreational activities; good knowledge of the rules and objectives of a variety of games and sports; ability to meet the public tactfully and diplomatically; ability to create interest in the recreation program and give instructions in various recreational activities; ability to work with groups of all ages in a firm and tactful manner; ability to maintain records and reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            There are no minimum education or experience requirements for this position.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

                        Candidates may be required to complete a basic Red Cross first-aid course or its equivalent.

                        Candidates may be required to obtain a certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, issued by the American Red Cross or Heart Association.
