DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is
responsible for conducting and supervising a planned recreational activity
within a recreation program. Work
involves operating responsibility for a particular area of recreational
activity such as gym, arts and crafts, plays, playground, group and individual
games. The incumbent exercises
supervision over a number of personnel.
Work is reviewed for adherence to established departmental policies
through reports, conferences and periodic observation of the supervised
activity area. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Conducts
and supervises a planned activity at a recreational facility;
Supervises
the work of a number of recreation leaders at a recreational facility in such
activities as arts and crafts, group or individual games, tournaments, plays,
camping or special events;
Enforces
safety rules and regulations in the recreational facility or area of
responsibility; administers first aid when necessary;
Instructs
staff members in the methods of teaching and officiating at recreational
activities;
Acts
as a sports official;
Maintains
records and prepares periodic reports on staff and recreational activities;
Issues
and cares for equipment, materials and supplies.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of sports, games,
hobbies and related recreational activities; some knowledge of the objectives
and methods used in the field of recreation; ability to deal tactfully and
diplomatically with the general public; ability to create interest in, and give
instructions in, various recreational activities; ability to plan and assign
the work of personnel for maximum efficiency; ability to work with all age
groups in a firm and tactful manner; ability to maintain records and prepare
activity reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Possession of a teaching certificate
(elementary or high school) recognized by the New York State Department of
Education and one (1) year of experience in conducting group recreational
activities; or,
b) Graduation from a New York State or
Regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in
Recreation and/or Physical Education and one (1) year of full time experience
in conducting group recreational activities; or,
c) Graduation from a standard senior high school
or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of
experience in conducting group
recreational activities; or,
d) An equivalent combination of education and
experience as defined by the limits of a), b) and c).
PROMOTIONAL
One
(1) year of permanent competitive status as a Recreation Leader.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Candidates may be required to complete a
basic Red Cross first-aid course or its equivalent.
2. Candidates may be required to obtain a
certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, issued by the American Red Cross.
