DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under direct supervision, an employee in this class performs a wide
variety of tasks in the development and conducting of recreation and entertainment
programs, organization and hobby groups, arrangement of religious services and
meetings, and the performance of other related duties for the benefit of
patients in a County institution. The
incumbent works with considerable independent judgment and initiative in
conducting activities within limits of institutional policies, rules and
regulations. Supervision may be exercised over Therapeutic Activities
Workers and volunteer workers. Work is
reviewed by an administrative supervisor through staff conferences and
observation. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists in planning and
conducting games, hobbies, film showings, parties, dances, community singing
and other recreational activities; instructs and encourages patients in the
necessary skills;
Rehearses and directs
patient shows; auditions, designs costumes, arranges for props, selects music
and prepares publicity releases;
Makes arrangements for
and schedules shows, concerts, and other programs offered by outside organizations;
may act in the capacity of a host or a master of ceremonies at institution
functions;
Assists chaplains with
preparations for religious services and meetings;
Supervises and teaches
Therapeutic Activities Workers and volunteers recreation skills which will
benefit patients;
Prepares and submits reports to an administrative supervisor on each patient's progress with recommendations of suitable future activities.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of games, hobbies and other recreational activities; good
knowledge of the principles, practices and methods used in the field of
recreation; some knowledge of supervisory methods; ability to establish and
maintain effective working relationships with patients, supervisors, co-workers
and the general public and ability to deal understandingly with the
recreational and entertainment needs of elderly persons; ability to create
interest in, and to organize, teach and direct hobby groups, stage shows and to
host parties; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of others in a
manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to speak before
different groups in an interesting and informative manner; ability to maintain
records and prepare reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands
of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a New
York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
Degree in Recreation or a related field.
