ASSISTANT RECREATION
PROGRAM COORDINATOR 4009
An employee in this class assists in developing, coordinating and
implementing recreation programs in a county, town or village recreation
department. Supervision is exercised
over Recreation Supervisors and other supervisory personnel engaged in
directing the activities of recreational programs. Work is performed under the direction of the Recreation Program
Coordinator, and is reviewed through observations, conferences and
reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists in developing and directing the implementation of recreational programs of the department;
Evaluates existing
programs to determine necessary improvements;
Coordinates and
supervises programs and activities administered by recreation personnel;
May directly
administer a major specialized program;
Assists in preparing
and administering the budget for recreational programs;
Develops publicity for
recreation programs and special events activities;
May train staff in
specialized activities;
Assists in preparing
written reports on departmental activities and services;
Maintains inventory
records for a specialized program.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of recreational
programs; good knowledge of effective administrative and supervisory
techniques; good knowledge of planning and equipping recreational facilities;
some knowledge of budget preparation and administration; some knowledge of the
techniques of publicity, promotion and public relations; ability to supervise
personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to
maintain records and prepare reports; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a
New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
Degree in Recreation and/or Physical Education, and one (1) year of supervisory
experience conducting recreational programs; or,
b) Graduation from a
standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma,
and five (5) years of experience conducting group recreational activities, one
(1) of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or,
c) An equivalent
combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
