DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class develops, coordinates and implements recreation programs in a town or village recreation department.  Supervision is exercised over Recreation Supervisors and other supervisory personnel engaged in directing the activities of recreational programs.  Work is performed under the direction of the Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner and is reviewed through periodic conferences and reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Develops and directs the implementation of recreational programs of the department;

            Evaluates existing programs to determine necessary improvements;

            Coordinates and supervises programs and activities administered by recreation personnel;

            May directly supervise a major specialized program;

            Prepares and administers the budget for all recreational programs;

            Coordinates public relations presentations and special events activities relative to individual programs;

            May train staff in specialized activities;

            Prepares written reports on departmental activities and services.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of recreational programs; good knowledge of effective administrative and supervisory techniques; good knowledge of planning and equipping recreational facilities; knowledge of budget preparation and administration; knowledge of the techniques of publicity, promotion and public relations; ability to plan, coordinate and supervise personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to maintain records and prepare reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Either:

            a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's degree in Recreation and/or Physical Education, and two (2) years of supervisory experience conducting recreational programs; or,

            b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six (6) years of experience conducting group recreational activities, two (2) of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or,

            c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).     

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            One (1) year of permanent competitive status as a Recreation Supervisor.
