DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for the overall management of ice rink operations and maintenance.  The incumbent supervises and trains personnel to ensure the safety of the public and staff. Supervision is exercised over professional, clerical and security personnel.  Work is reviewed by an adminis­trative supervisor through consultations and periodic reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Supervises the daily operations of a municipality's ice rink, its person­nel, maintenance and safety practices and procedures;

          Oversees skating lesson programs and reviews the work of professional skating instructors;

          Supervises a hockey program;

          Schedules use of the ice for charter groups, lessons, hockey program and the general public;

          Supervises and trains part-time personnel, including cashiers and guards;

          Maintains daily timesheets;

          Prepares and maintains revenue reports;

          Coordinates ice maintenance schedules with maintenance crews.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Good knowledge of methods and procedures required in the operation and maintenance of ice rink facilities; good knowledge of recreational activities and the operations of recreational programs; good knowledge of proper ice maintenance techniques; ability to plan and supervise the recreation center staff to attain smooth and efficient performance results; ability to maintain good relations with the local community; ability to gather data and prepare reports; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          a)  Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's degree which includes an emphasis in Recreation or Physical Education and one (1) year of experience in managing an ice rink facility; or,

          b)  Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience in managing an ice rink facility; or,

          c)  An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
