DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is
responsible for the annual planning associated with the provision of organized
recreation programs by a municipality. Responsibility is included for
administrative oversight of programs underway and may extend to oversight of
summer park and beach facilities. Work is performed under the direction of an
administrative supervisor, and is reviewed through observations, conferences
and reports. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Develops
annual plans for recreation programs in assigned areas, including description
of each program, staff and equipment needed, time and dates, purchase of
associated trophies and tee-shirts, fees, and projected profit or expense to
municipality;
Interviews
prospective instructors to refine goals of program and negotiate salary, drafts
contract for administrative approval;
Recruits
sponsors to share expenses of programs;
Establishes
methods of publicity and dates for release of material;
Assists
with registration for planned activities;
Assists
with reconciliation of fees collected and registration information;
Evaluates
programs to determine necessary improvements;
Makes
site visits to programs in progress to observe instructor and participants;
Provides
information for use in preparing the budget for recreational programs;
Responds
to public inquiries and complaints regarding recreation programs;
Issues
park permits and maintains coordinated calendar of facility usage;
Assists
in preparing written reports on departmental activities and services;
May
have administrative oversight of parks and beaches, with responsibility for
overseeing operations and records of fees collected, and general supervision of
seasonal staff.

ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the principles and
methods of recreational programs; good knowledge of effective administrative
techniques; good knowledge of planning programs and equipping recreational
facilities; some knowledge of budget preparation; some knowledge of the
techniques of publicity, promotion and public relations; ability to supervise
personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to
maintain records and prepare reports; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma, and four (4) years of experience in planning group recreational
programs, one (1) of which must have included program and/or facility
supervision.
