DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class serves as an assistant to the Superintendent of Recreation I in all phases of the recreation department in a town or village that has a population of up to 100,000.  The incumbent assists in the planning and organization of new programs and facilities and may be required to participate in specific recreation activities.  The employee is required to perform the duties of the Superintendent in the Superintendent's absence.  The work is performed under the general direction of the Superintendent of Recreation I or another administrative supervisor and is reviewed for compliance with departmental policies and procedures.  Direct supervision is exercised over professional and non-professional personnel who are employed in all phases of the recreation program.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists the administrative head of a recreation department in a town or village;

            Assists in the organization, direction and coordination of a program of recreational activities;

            Assists in the preparation of the Recreation Department's budget;

            Assists in the planning and maintenance of recreational areas;

            Supervises, trains and advises staff members in the promotion, organization and conduct of recreational activities;

            Supervises the public relations activities, which include press releases and radio announcements to promote the recreation department;

            Prepares and issues periodic reports on the activities and services provided by the recreation department.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the principles and practices related to recreational programs; good knowledge of effective administrative and supervisory techniques; some knowledge of planning and equipping recreational facilities; ability to conduct a public relations program; ability to schedule and coordinate activities and personnel for maximum efficiency; ability to deal effectively with people from all age groups; ability to maintain records and prepare reports; tact; courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Either:

            a)  Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Master's degree in Recreation or Parks Administration; or;

            b)  Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree which includes, or is supplemented by, at least fifteen (15) credit hours in professional recreation courses (such courses to include recreational principles and programs, philosophy of recreation and recreation administration), and one (1) year of supervisory experience in the conduct of a recreation program; or,

            c)  Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of supervisory experience in the conduct of a recreation program; or,

            d)  An equivalent combination of education and experience defined by the limits of a), b) and c).

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            One (1) year of permanent competitive status as a Recreation Program Coordinator; or,

            Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as an Assistant Recreation Program Coordinator; or,

            Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Recreation Supervisor.
