DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for assisting the Director of Sports and Recreation in all phases of the Sports and Recreation Division.  The incumbent will assist in the planning and organization of new programs and facilities and may be required to participate in specific sports and recreation programs.  The employee is required to perform the duties of the Director in the Director's absence.  The work is performed under the general direction of the Director of Sports and Recreation and is reviewed for compliance with polices and procedures.  Direct supervision is exercised over a professional and non-professional staff.  Does related work as required.     

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Assists in the organization, direction and coordination of the sports and recreation program;

         Assists in the preparation of the division's budget;

         Assists in the planning and maintenance of sports and recreation facilities;

         Supervises, trains and advises staff members in the promotion, organization and conduct of sports and recreational activities;

         Oversees the computer activities of the division;

         Prepares and issues periodic reports on the activities and services provided by the division.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the principles and practices related to sports and recreational programs;  good knowledge of effective administrative and supervisory techniques;  knowledge of planning and equipping sports and recreational facilities;  ability to coordinate activities and personnel for maximum efficiency;  ability to deal effectively with the public;  ability to maintain records and prepare reports;  physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.   

 

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         OPEN COMPETITIVE                                                                                                                              

Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education or Exercise & Sports Science or a related field and (2) two years of experience as a physical education instructor or recreation instructor for a public or private agency.
