DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class has responsibility for developing, coordinating and implementing sports and recreation programs for Suffolk County.  The incumbent directs a staff responsible for supervising day-to-day operations of the division. Work is performed under the general direction of the department head and is reviewed through conferences and reports.  Does related work as required.       

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Develops and directs the implementation of sports and recreation programs of the division;

         Evaluates programs to determine necessary improvements;

         Coordinates and supervises programs and activities;

         May directly supervise a specialized program;

         Prepares and administers the budget for all sports and recreation programs;

         Coordinates public relations presentations and special event activities relative to individual programs;

         May train staff in specialized activities;

         Prepares written reports on divisional activities and services.

   

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Through knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of sports and recreational programs;  good knowledge of effective administrative and supervisory techniques;  good knowledge of planning and equipping sports and recreational facilities;  knowledge of budget preparation and administration;  knowledge of the techniques of publicity, promotion and public relations;  ability to plan, coordinate and supervise personnel in a matter conducive to full performance and high morale;  ability to maintain records and prepare reports;  ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department heads and County administration;  physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.    

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         OPEN COMPETITIVE

         Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree, and (4) years of administrative experience in a public or private agency, (2) two which must have been in the administration of a sports and recreation program. 

 

         PROMOTIONAL

         Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as an Assistant Director of Sports and Recreation.
