DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An
employee in this class performs skilled public safety work in monitoring the
activities of swimmers in pool, still water or ocean areas. A Lifeguard is responsible for safeguarding
patrons to prevent injury or loss of life, and for administering first aid or
artificial resuscitation when necessary.
Work is performed in accordance with the rules and regulations in effect
at the facility and in accordance with state and/or local codes. Work is
performed under general supervision and
is reviewed through observation. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Observes
swimmers for signs of fatigue or distress;
Maintains order and
enforces regulations at assigned swimming area;
Rescues bathers in
distress; administers resuscitation and first aid when necessary;
Shares in maintaining
cleanliness and upkeep of swimming pool area.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of approved water rescue methods and first aid
techniques; good knowledge of rules and regulations relating to the assigned
pool, still water or ocean facilities; skill in swimming, lifesaving techniques
appropriate to the assigned facilities; skill in first aid and cardiopulmonary
resuscitation; ability to exercise tact, firmness and good judgment in
enforcing rules and regulations; ability to prevent dangerous situations from
arising, to recognize emergencies and to take effective action; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
There
are no minimum education or experience requirements for this position.
1) At the time of
appointment, candidates must possess the appropriate current certificate as a
Lifeguard issued by the New York State Department of Health or a New York State
Department of Health approved testing agency, and must maintain said
certificate throughout employment in this title. The appropriate certificate
will be determined by the appointing authority based upon the facilities to
which the Lifeguard is assigned.
2) At the time of
appointment, candidates must possess a certificate in cardiopulmonary
resuscitation, issued by the American Red Cross or Heart Association within the
last year.
3) Candidates must be
at least sixteen (16) years of age. If assigned to a pool or inland beach, it
is acceptable for a candidate to be fifteen (15) years of age if a supervisory
lifeguard is present.
