DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs skilled public safety work in monitoring the activities of swimmers at a County ocean beach facility.  The Lifeguard (Ocean) is responsible for safeguarding patrons at an ocean beach area to prevent injury or loss of life; and for administering first aid or artificial resuscitation when necessary.  Work is performed under direct supervision, in accordance with the rules and regulations in effect at the facility and in accordance with state and/or local codes and is reviewed through observation.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Observes swimmers for signs of fatigue or distress;

          Maintains order and enforces regulations at assigned swimming area;

          Rescues bathers in distress; administers resuscitation and first aid when necessary;

          Operates a boat at ocean facility to patrol swimming area to enforce regulations and to expedite rescue efforts;

          Shares in maintaining cleanliness and upkeep of swimming area.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of approved water rescue methods and first aid techniques; good knowledge of rules and regulations relating to facility activities; skill in ocean swimming, lifesaving techniques, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation; ability to exercise tact, firmness and good judgment in enforcing such rules and regulations; ability to prevent dangerous situations from arising, to recognize emergencies and to take effective action; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          There are no minimum education or experience requirements for this position.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

          1) At the time of appointment, candidates must possess a current certificate as a Lifeguard for ocean water issued by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, and maintain said certificate throughout employment in this position.                                                                                    

         2) At the time of appointment, candidates must possess a certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, issued by the American Red Cross or Heart Association within the last year.           

         3) Candidates must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.
