DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class supervises a beach complex or an assigned section of the complex.  The employee supervises and reviews the work of Lifeguards and maintains their skill and physical endurance through regular training and testing.  The work is reviewed by the Chief Lifeguard through observation of beach activities and by consultations on unusual and difficult problems.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists the Chief Lifeguard in the supervision of Lifeguard personnel;

          Makes daily inspections of the beach area, equipment and Lifeguards;

          Assumes the duties of the Chief Lifeguard when delegated;

          Directs the activities of Lifeguards at daily swimming, rowing, running,

and lifesaving exercises; conducts in-service lifeguard training programs;

          Keeps time records of employees;

          Enforces and explains the rules and regulations relating to beach safety; resolves disputes between Lifeguards and patrons, and refers more difficult problems to the appropriate authorities.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of lifesaving and resuscitation methods and first aid techniques; thorough knowledge of facility rules and regulations; skill in pool and surf swimming, lifesaving, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation; ability to plan, supervise and direct the work of Lifeguards in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to prevent dangerous situations from arising, to recognize emergencies and to take effective action; ability to establish and maintain effective public relations; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          Either:

          a)  One (1) seasons' experience as a Senior Lifeguard; or,

          b) Three (3) seasons' experience as a Lifeguard; at least one (1) season must have been in a supervisory capacity.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

          1) At the time of appointment, candidates must possess or have possessed a certificate as a Lifeguard appropriate for the facility to which the incumbent is assigned, issued by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services or a New York State Department of Health approved testing agency.

          2) At the time of appointment, candidates must possess a certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, issued by the American Red Cross or Heart Association within the last year.
