DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class plans, assigns and supervises work of Lifeguards in swimming areas which present unusual and difficult water safety problems.  Duties include assigning and reviewing the work of Lifeguards and maintaining their skill and physical endurance through regular swimming and lifesaving exercises and tests.  The work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through observation of beach activities and consultation on unusual and difficult problems.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Plans, assigns and supervises the work of Lifeguards safeguarding bathers; makes daily inspection of the beach and its equipment, and instructs Lifeguards on work problems;

          Supervises Lifeguards performing routine beach maintenance and disposal of seaweed, picking up debris, and other general cleaning duties, when this does not interfere with bathers' safety;

          Maintains physical fitness of Lifeguards by allowing time for daily swimming, rowing, running and lifesaving techniques; conducts departmental

in-service training programs for Lifeguards;

          Supervises the enforcement of rules and regulations relating to beach activities; resolves disputes that arise between Lifeguards and beach patrons, and takes appropriate action to resolve complaints and maintain good public relations;

          Keeps abreast of all advances in techniques and methods of beach patrol and lifesaving activities;

          Keeps time reports on employees;

          Prepares reports on activities and emergencies.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of water rescue methods and first aid techniques; comprehensive knowledge of facility rules and regulations; skill in pool and surf swimming, lifesaving, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation; ability to plan and supervise the work of Lifeguards in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to prevent dangerous situations from arising, to recognize emergencies, and to take effective action; ability to establish and maintain effective public relations; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          Either:

          a) Two (2) seasons' experience as a Senior Lifeguard or Assistant Chief Lifeguard; or,

          b) Four (4) seasons' experience as a Lifeguard; at least two (2) seasons must have been in a supervisory capacity.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

          1) At the time of appointment, candidates must possess or have possessed a certificate as a Lifeguard appropriate for the facility to which the incumbent is assigned, issued by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services or a New York State Department of Health approved testing agency.                          

          2) At the time of appointment, candidates must possess a certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, issued by the American Red Cross or Heart
