DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS       

Under general direction, an employee in this class performs administrative and professional duties in the operation of the Marine Museum.  Work includes the responsibility for displaying and maintaining collections of marine specimens, artifacts, objects of historical significance and assembling information concerning their significance and acquisition.  Administrative duties include maintaining inventory, handling correspondence, planning an preparing, the annual budget and reports, and conducting special guided tours.  The employee exercises a considerable amount of independent initiative and judgment and is subject to review by the Commissioner of Parks.  Does related work as required.    

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES           

            Plans and administers the maintenance and display of various exhibits and displays;

            Through various contacts, locates items of historical significance and makes arrangements for the Museum to acquire such by purchase, donation or inheritance;

            Escorts special guests, school children and others through the Museum explaining exhibits;

            Maintains inventory, handles correspondence and reports, and writes work assignments for personnel;

            Meets with the Museum Committee set up under the Education Law, to collage and coordinate the work between the Parks Department and the Museum Committee;

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of display repair, restoration, and evaluation of a wide variety of museum artifacts; Thorough knowledge of current sources of information and literature pertaining to marine life, its history, research and findings; good knowledge of the established principles nd practices used in administering a museum; some knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations and public speaking and the ability to apply them to promotional and lecturing tasks; ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with community leaders; professional colleagues, organizations, public officials, and the general public.           

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school and four years experience in the preparation of and maintenance of museum exhibits.

            Relevant additional education will be substituted for experience on a year-to-year basis.
