DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for directing the operation of a historic site which is being preserved by a municipality.  The incumbent schedules and conducts guided tours, researches the history of items contained in the collection and supervises the maintenance and repair of the site and the items preserved in it.  Responsibility for the preparation of the budget, requisition of supplies and the collection of fees paid by visitors to the site may also be included as part of the duties of the position.  Supervision is received through conferences and observation by administrative supervisors.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Supervises the preservation, maintenance and care of a historic site and its contents;

          Schedules and conducts guided tours of a historic site for school children and other interested groups;

          Catalogues the contents of a historic site and supervises the continuation and inventory of the cataloging system;

          Conducts correspondence related to research activities with officials of other historic sites, and conducts research as to the authenticity and value of the items contained within the site;

          Prepares the annual budget, requisitions supplies and collects fees from visitors to a historic site;

          Prepares special exhibits of various items, and may decorate the site in accordance with holiday seasons or special celebrations.

         

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the display, preservation and repair of a wide variety of historic objects and memorabilia; good knowledge of current sources of information and literature pertaining to antiques, collections of historic items, local history and research; good knowledge of the practices and principles of administering a historic site and of maintaining a system of cataloging historic items; knowledge of the principles of public relations and public speaking; ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with community leaders, public officials and the general public; ability to analyze facts and to exercise sound judgment in arriving at conclusions; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to keep a variety of records and to prepare and submit reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

         

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          a)  Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and two (2) years of experience as a historic researcher; or,

          b)  Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and two (2) years of experience in an administrative or technical capacity at a museum; or,

          c)  An equivalent combination of the above education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
